Levies fuel potential. 300 of the 340 school districts in Minnesota currently have at least one operating levy to supplement funding from the state, which doesn’t even keep up with inflation. Districts now rely on levies to fund core academic programs and services. They help cover the costs of running schools – paying for things like teacher salaries, classroom supplies, transportation, security, energy costs and insurance. Levies also help provide essential academic, arts and athletics programs and activities–helping to minimize ever-rising activity fees.
The average levy amount per student in Minnesota is $696. District 742 currently levies only $97 per student – less than 15% of the state average. And that will expire in June, 2009. If the levy fails, our community will go through an unprecedented round of cost cuts – including teachers, programs and even buildings.
“Funding for schools is directly related to the quality of the regional workforce, productivity, and local economic development,” said St. Cloud Area Chamber President Teresa Bohnen. “This is even more critical during challenging economic times.” Board members stated that they believe it is in the best interest of business to make sure we have the highest quality education possible in Central Minnesota.
Support the 2008 Operating Levy. This levy will directly impact the results that come out of the classrooms. It’s about education. It’s about opportunities. It’s about a strong community. It's about excellence and accountability.

Are you one of the 70% of Minnesotans that don’t have children in school? So why should you support education and vote to pass this levy?
District 742 has always been thoughtful and transparent when it comes to finances.
